Synopsis

John Turner has been living a lie most of his life. Growing up in the rural Georgia town of Magnolia Ridge, he’s only ever let one person truly know him: his best friend, Chloe. To the rest of the world, they’re the perfect couple, but just between them, she’s helping John hide in plain sight.

Matt Kinsley, a cop from San Francisco, moves to town looking for a slower pace and to reconnect with his Southern roots. Starting over in Magnolia Ridge means taking a step into the closet, but Matt finds that with John for company, he doesn’t mind so much.

As the two start to explore a possible relationship, a horrific murder rips the town apart but brings John and Matt together in ways neither could’ve imagined. Matt must decide where his loyalties lie while John resists the urge to run again. Together, they have to discover who the real devil is before another life is destroyed.

Lisa’s Review

When The Devil Wants In is a joint collaboration by authors J.H. Knight and Cate Ashwood. I had no idea what to expect going into this book. What a pleasant surprise. I could not help but cheer on John and Matt, our two protagonists. These two men, definitely from two very different worlds, suddenly find themselves thrown off course all because they discover one another. It may have not been the greatest timing, but walking away was also not an option they wanted to contemplate.

John Turner has lived his whole life in the small Georgia town of Magnolia. He’s got his best friend, Chloe, there and his family. John has never considered moving from the town, even though it means living a lie on a daily basis. When Matt Kinsley, a cop from San Francisco, moves to Magnolia and joins the local police force, John is a little taken aback. For the first time ever, he’s not sure how he’s going to keep himself in check. Matt may be the first person John has ever considered exploring more than a lust-filled encounter with. Just as the two men are getting to know each other, the town is rocked by a tragic murder. It’s enough to put John and Matt on opposite ends of the spectrum. Will their new found love survive?

I loved how John and Matt simply fell into one another - the insecurities, the awkward beginning, the desire, the passion. It was all there and so realistically done. Let’s face it, how many of us start lasting relationships effortlessly and flawlessly? Anything real and worth it is always going to be messy, mistakes will be made and the awkwardness is simply part of it all. John may be living deep in the closet, but the connection he feels with Matt is not one he can ignore. I loved how patient Matt was and understanding. This is a character-driven story that definitely kept me intrigued. I got wrapped up in the suspense-filled plot. I loved how Matt was unwilling to give up on John and was determined to prove to him that he was there to stay for the long haul despite the uncertainty in their relationship. Amidst the chaotic and hectic turn of events, can both men hang on to one another without causing the other to fall?

I really did enjoy reading When The Devil Wants In. It is a tale about embracing love even when it comes at you at the most inopportune time in your life. Definitely worth the read for M/M suspense lovers.

J.H. Knight

J.H. Knight has been writing love stories since the second grade. When she’s not catering to the whims of her imaginary friends (whom she sometimes refers to as “characters”), she’s usually found driving her four children all over the planet, working on a school project, or saying things like “Not until your homework is done!” A Pacific Northwest native, she loves the outdoors in every season whether she’s in the city, in the mountains, or building sloppy sandcastles with her kids on the beach. On her best days, she’s cuddled up with a good book, and on her worst days she’s tearing her hair out as she tries to decide if her sentence needs a comma or a semi-colon. She gratefully bows down in awe of editors, since she usually gets it wrong.
